FSHP 2019 Political Action Committee Year End Review

FSHP PAC

Thank you to all our present and future PAC Contributors!

The goal of the FSHP PAC is to provide political contributions to legislators who are allies of the pharmacy health system industry AND willing to advocate legislatively on behalf of pharmacy issues.

We advocate legislatively for the future of pharmacy:

  • Through expansion of pharmacist jobs by allowing us to practice at the top of our license
  • Physician-Pharmacist Collaborative Practice Legislation
  • Improved Pharmacy Technician roles and jobs
  • Transparency in drug pricing

2019 Legislative Session Brief Review

Our Collaborative Practice Bill now officially called “Consultant Pharmacist” Bill made it through the House for the 2nd year in a row sponsored by Rep Cord Byrd! Unfortunately, The Senate Version, SB 1050, sponsored by Senator Manny Diaz, Jr. was not heard in the Senate.

We were successful in defeating HB 687 and SB 1170 Automated dispensing cabinets however these bills nearly passed. They are back in 2020 and allow automated dispensing cabinets for public use in any area in the community where the owner would like to put them. It also allows for Florida licensed pharmacists who live in other states to remote in and talk to patients who live in Florida.

The PBM transparency bill was never heard in Senate or the House.

The Infections Disease Elimination Act, HB 171 and SB 366, allows for Counties to work with the Department of Health to provide a needle/syringe exchange program using private funds. The CDC estimates nearly $500,000 for each patient over a lifetime may be saved by reducing HIV and Hepatitis C transmission through infected needles.

The remote technician dispensing bill did not present itself in 2019.  This bill allows pharmacy technicians to dispense medications with remote pharmacist oversight.

2020 Florida Legislative Session

  • The 2020 session begins in January of this year and Legislative Days will be held Jan 21 and 22 in Tallahassee.
  • A 1-hour CE credit webinar will be released around mid-January discussing state and national pharmacy legislation.

Our FSHP lobbyist and Contract Counsel is Joseph R Salzverg, Esq, of Gray Robinson, P.A.  Gray Robinson is a top 5 lobby firm in Florida with over 300 attorneys and consultants and 14 offices throughout the state.  Joseph immediately got to work and provided a campaign giving plan for our PAC. See below.

In 2018, we supported 15 legislators and of those 14 (93%) won their general election seats! There were no elections in 2019.

Our PAC members contributed $34,536.00 of our goal of $50,000.
