Regional Society of the Month

Southern Gulf Society

The Southern Gulf Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SGHSP)  encompasses Ft. Myers, Naples, Cape Coral and other cities in the surrounding area. SGHSP members are from Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Desoto counties.

The society includes approximately 100 pharmacist, resident, technician, and student members. The key goals of the regional society this year are to increase active memberships and member involvement, and optimize meeting attendance while maintaining quality continuing education programs.

Recent regional events have included FL BOP-approved CE on validation of controlled substance prescriptions and medication errors. We are also planning two more consultant pharmacist events for the coming year.

Regional Officer Listing

Our members are extremely involved in FSHP at the state level including FSHP Treasurer Stephen Kessinger, FRC Steering Committee member Edgar Turner, Educational Affairs Council member Ashley Cubillos, Professional Affairs council members Karl Healy and Larry Clark, and Membership Affairs Council member Susan Mitchelson.

Finally, we would like to congratulate Tina Gegeckas for receiving the FSHP 2016 Pharmacist of the Year Award and Pete Duggan for receiving the FSHP 2016 Medication Safety Award at the annual meeting.

Featured Student Chapter

Nova Southeastern University

Our NSU-SSHP Chapter is located in all three of NSU’s College of Pharmacy locations: Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Over the past five months, our chapter has put on a CV Workshop, an Interview Skills Workshop, participated in multiple community service projects, and had over 40 teams participate in the annual ASHP Clinical Skills Competition at the local level.  At each of our SSHP Workshops, we had about 20 pharmacists and residents in attendance as well as over 50 students. Last month, we arranged for the FSHP President, Dr. Kathy Baldwin, to come to our campus. She had an interactive discussion with our COP students on how we can get involved and make an impact on the profession, advocacy, and the future of pharmacy.

Just last month, we appointed our first ever SSHP “P1 Policy Chair” and had our annual “Pie-the-Faculty” Fundraiser, where we raised money to donate to the ASHP-PAC. Our 9th Annual SSHP Residency Showcase and Workshop where we will have over 50 pharmacists and 100 students in attendance will be occurring next week. During this highly anticipated event, students have the unique opportunity as a P1, P2, P3, and P4, to explore over 15 Residency Programs from the tri-county area to introduce themselves, as well as ask any individualized questions during the roundtable discussion.

FSHP Leadership Spotlight

Professional Affairs Council

The Professional Affairs Council has been working hard for the FSHP membership this year.
The Council evaluated overall FSHP processes, new and old.  We standardized old FSHP awards and created a new one for individuals.  We created templates for members to submit project ideas to leadership.  Also, the creation of a fellowship is well under way.  The Council will continue to coordinate the Poster Session at the Annual Meeting, along with previous years.
Our pharmacists, technicians, and students worked in tandem to accomplish these goals this year.  Throughout the year, we partnered closely with our Board of Directors liaisons and FSHP staff.  This combination ensured our success.
