 Student Chapter of the month

The ASHP-SSHP chapter at the Gregory School of Pharmacy is located in the heart of West Palm, just walking distance from Palm Beach Island. As a smaller chapter we are proud of our chapter’s continued growth in both size and regional/national recognition.

This past year we hosted both FSHP president, Kathy Baldwin, as well as Immediate past ASHP president John Armistead, who both facilitated great discussion regarding policy and advancing the profession of pharmacy. Our chapter also celebrated national PAI week, through various activities with intentions of raising awareness to the 5 pillars of PAI; consequently, we raised $200 which was donated to the ASHP-PAC.

To finish the semester, we look forward to giving our members more insight on the residency process by hosting our annual Residency Forum III. Here, our 4th year students who have recently matched will come share their personal experiences and advice for a smooth application process.

FSHP Leadership Spotlight

Legal & Regulatory Affairs Council

What's happening with the Legal & Regulatory (L&R) Affairs Council?

Who makes the laws for our profession in Florida and who oversees that those laws will help our profession move forward? If you answered those questions with either the Board of Pharmacy or the Florida legislators, you would be partially correct. However, FSHP’s Legal and Regulatory Council, as well as FSHP’s general counsel, Larry Gonzalez, oversees those activities to make sure that those laws or rules are in the best interest for health systems pharmacists.

Does it give you a good feeling when you are teaching a patient about their medications and they tell you that no other healthcare provider has ever spent that much time with them reviewing their medications? It’s the same type of feeling that one gets when, as a Legal and Regulatory Council Member, you are able to help draft language and get a piece of legislation passed that provides educational standards for pharmacy technician licensure. Also, what about when the Board of Pharmacy changes a rule that they were going to implement due to one of your council members providing input into the rule during one of the Board of Pharmacy Meetings?

These are the functions and roles that the Legal and Regulatory Council provide for our Society. This year, under the leadership of Chairman, Gary Dalin, and Vice Chairperson, Karen Sando, we are trying to get our collaborative practice bill passed after a year of compromise and education by a subcommittee headed by Dan Buffington. This has resulted in a bill (SB1180) being drafted and sponsored by Senator Jose Rodriguez. As of this moment, we are trying to find a House Sponsor to move this legislation forward to committee hearings.

On the Board of Pharmacy scene, the Legal and Regulatory Council will be working with the Board in helping to reshape 64B16-27.830 regarding Drug Therapy Management. Also under Governor Scott’s request to limit the number of rules for each Board, the Board will be trying to consolidate all the pharmacy automation rules under one rule. Your L & R Council members will be attending the Board Meetings to give input and to make sure that our institutional automation rule will not be adversely affected in this consolidation of the rules.

We look for new members at the start of each new year to help us achieve the goals of our council. We can always use members from the various facets of our membership to make our council more diverse representing our members.

On the FSHP website, under the advocacy tab, keep up with the 2017 Florida Legislative Session by checking the Bill Tracking Report to see how not only our collaborative practice bill is going, but all the other bills that may affect our profession.
